Preparing a Tank

Salty or Fresh Water?

Without a doubt, fresh-water tanks are much easier to take care of and maintain. Salt-water tanks require a lot of set-up and a great deal of maintenance. You will have to ensure that the water is at the proper PH level, that your fish are the proper kind and that they can live together, and numerous other topics. For a beginner, 10 gallon fish tanks should only be used to create fresh-water environments for fish. In fact, many experts recommend that for a salt-water environment, the tank should be no smaller than 30 gallons.

Preparing 10-Gallon Fish Tanks

In order to prepare your tank, you’ll need to clean it with mild soap and water. Use only a mild dish detergent and make sure that you get every bit of the soap completely out of the tank. You may then want to use micro-fiber towels to dry the inside to make sure all traces of soap are gone. You’ll also need to clean pumps, filters, décor, and gravel in the same way to ensure that all contaminants that are potentially dangerous to fish are gone. Then, you’ll want to fill the tank with clean water. If you use city water that is chlorinated, you’ll need to purchase drops that will remove the chlorine from the water so that your fish will not be in danger.

Let the water sit in the tank for two days at least, so that you can make sure there are no leaks and that the fish tank is working properly. Set up the pump and let it run for this amount of time as well.
